‘when’

 

when

like a falling flower-print cotton dress

has dropped its round spoor

in the silence onto the bedroom floor

 

when

like the moment one who has been reading

instructions on propagation

understands and the room blooms with light

 

when

like an ascending sun-lit valley mist

has eaten its way through all appearances

to substitute its own luminous idea

 

when

like the salt-wetness breaking bounds in my eyes

in an original participation

I lean over and touch what is there

my hand passing through what I thought was there all along

 

when

in an instant it is clear all the bridges are down

how can I speak to anybody about that

now my bones take on the white of alyssum

my bones

those mossy cushions in a grandfather’s front garden

 

my bones

though he’s long been in his grave

his daughter revives him without knowing how

 

his bones

time and again his bones where she sits in the morning sun

in the sun room

where the giant Scrabble board is stowed

 

his bones beside the giant ivory-coloured letter tiles

she will score twelve with the name of a flower

 

his bones a white perfume

her bones

 

my bones

trying to become an unobtrusive white bedding annual

an accident in the stonework of a bridge

‘as a crow in the sticks of a winter tree’

after Basavanna

 

as a crow in the sticks of a winter tree

it hops

from branch to branch

 

my heart is not to be trusted

 

this smouldering coal-black feathered thing

goes hop-hop

at one thing then at another at my desk

then into the noisy street

 

it flaps and flies off

to land again in the bare branches of a second tree

ruffling its feathers

as if perhaps beginning to catch fire

 

hop-hop

all the bridges are down

after Mahadeviyakka 

 

O twitterstorm

of geese across the placid lake

beside the new-varnished boats for hire by the hour

don’t you know

 

he would watch for chalky smudges in the blue sky

beyond the aerials

above the broken rooftiles don’t you know

 

those revelatory diaries in the attic undiscovered

each remembering

more than he could recall don’t you know

 

above the plaster-boarded ceiling the light rose

above the crackling nylon sheets

above her weary limbs don’t you know

 

above her slack-muscled limbs wrapped in his arms

the local station playing

all the bridges down

‘at my mother’s high bleached bedside’

 

at my mother’s high bleached bedside

a couple of transparent drips

the monitors bleeping

and across the ward a woman mostly of skin and bone

cries out is that your daughter

and though I have a grown-up daughter

she’s not here so can I laugh it off

as so much senile rapture

though it’s not easy

is that your daughter now she is repeating

and I wonder what it is she thinks she sees

and would it be acceptable

to question her about what it is

who do you believe is standing beside me

though you see nothing

I’m sure she sees nothing of what’s actually here

and she proves it with her wide-eyed gazing

into the white-scrubbed air

repeating look at the bees swarming

O look at the bees

swarming where the bridges are down

between a drowning man and my child’s skinny dipping

between lip and kiss

between brother

and estranged younger brother

between a mother and one of her six children

between the kissing gate

and the coffin route between cup and lip

between the first slurp and sip

between the fibreglass fishing rod and the spinning lure

between old Capague and Montulet

between the will

and the contraction of the atrophied muscles

between town and country

between wealth and what is a simple lack of money

between the biscuit tin

to put their money in

and fake news a hedge fund or tabloid confessions of sin

the letter unsent the deleted email

the skilfully incised lapidary inscription

tragically lost

with its improbable cost

with its ‘always and forever’ critical burden

words scrawled on a scrap of paper by someone

by the old gods of rumour

all the bridges are falling down

daubed with shitty feathers

eggs cracked in a bowl

when were they kin

 

growing weed under LEDs

headlines and tenderness

in the moment of conception

when were they kin

 

john smith marries jane doe

klaxons sounding

languages east west north south

when were they kin

 

my emigre daughter

notes from strings of a mandolin

olives in a screw-top jar

when were they kin

 

pulsing blue in the Uber driver’s ear

queries on the first page

red sky in the morning

tangled nests of fishing line

up and over the brim

very near the end
